LIONESSES 1,BRIGHTON 2.
Published by Millwall Lionesses Media on October 10, 2011
Despite losing 2-1 to Brighton, the Lionesses continued to show vast improvement on their poor start to the season.
A slow start by the Lionesses allowed top of the table Brighton to score an early goal after four minutes.
The visitors continued the pressure for a further twenty minutes but were unable to break down the determined Millwall defence.
And as the half wore on the young Lionesses attack began to create chances of their own.
After a half time talk from manager Alberto Kurti the girls came out and matched their opponents in every department.
Substitute Francisca Ali was first to go close after latching onto a poor clearance from a corner and hooked the ball goal wards only to see it land on top of the bar. Kasia Viggor was next to go close after chasing a through ball beating the keeper to the ball only to see the last defender clear of the line.
At the other end Brighton were restricted to two free kicks which produced two outstanding saves from Deborah Cole in the Millwall goal.
The Lionesses pressure finally paid off when after 67 minutes when a Shauni Griffiths cross was handled inside the area.
Kasia Viggor calmly stepped up to slot the ball past the visiting keeper.
Millwall kept up the pressure but with seven minutes remaining disaster struck , a sudden Brighton attack saw a 3 on 3 situation. A perfect ball from Brightons right wing cleared everyone’s head only to land at the feet of the left winger rushing in, who slotted the ball home past Cole in the home goal.
The last five minute saw the Lionesses press for the equaliser and almost got one when Viggor was put through, ten yards from goal she let fly as the last defender came sliding in. Her goal bound shot was stopped by the arm of the defender sliding in front of her.
Unfortunately none of the officials saw the infringement and the game finished with all three points going to back to the south coast with Brighton
